"Silver was one of my first heroes along with Clifford Brown. He was one of the main reasons I came to love jazz. On my radio program "The Art Of Jazz" at WHPK-FM in Chicago I not only played his recordings but used his music as station fill-ins; pieces like "Silver's Blue", "Calcutta Cutie" and "Blue Silver". "The Back Beat" was used as background music for our child safety public service announcements. He was an iconic figure who's contribution to the Art is incalculable. Like John Coltrane he was very spiritual. My sincerest condolences to his family."

"When first attending Morgan State University (then College) in 1958, I became an instant fan after witnessing multiple nickels ( my nickels included ) dropped in the canteen's juke box to repeated plays of "Soulville", "The Back Beat" and "No Smoking". From that period on, I looked to buy any record with the name, Horace Silver as part of the group...and if possible, never missed a chance to see him perform. Mr. Silver, thank you for making my life a lot BRIGHTER."
