Peter J. Salerno
July 12, 1960 - January 6, 2014

Peter Joseph Salerno, age 53, died January 6, 2014, at Holy Cross Hospital from a heart attack, a result of type 1 diabetes.

He was a senior electrical systems engineer for NASA Flight Microwave and Telecommunications at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt. In 2013 he earned the 30 Year Service Award from NASA, where he contributed on numerous space shuttle, satellite, and Hubble projects. From 1990-99 he was on the team servicing missions for the Hubble Space Telescope. His work on spacecraft ranged from radio frequency communication and navigation to electromagnetic interference and compatibility. He also served on engineering design review boards at Goddard.

He was born July 12, 1960, in Washington, D.C. He graduated from Rockville's Richard Montgomery High School in 1977 and received his B.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Maryland in 1983.

His outside interests included hunting and fishing. He judged field competitions for the National Association of Versatile Hunting Dogs of America (NAVHDA) (Potomac Chapter), and Weimaraner Club of America (WDC WCA), and for the Izaak Walton League of America, Bethesda Chevy Chase Chapter, where he also worked on land conservation. He was an Extra Class Amateur Radio ham radio operator (N3HI), and a lifetime member of the American Radio Relay League (ARRL).

He is survived by his wife of 28 years. Susan Boerner Salerno and by his brother, Robert Salerno of New Windsor, NY, and sisters Ann Gervasio of Herndon, Va. and Joanne Salerno of Portland, Or., and parents, Elizabeth and James Salerno of Rockville, Md.

A graveside service was held at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring on January 17, 2014.
