"My mother and Mel's mother were first cousins. My family has been in touch with him for many years. My dad,Hod Mullen, was a lobbyist in Washington D.C.in the fities and had contact with Mel or Bom as we called him. When my father,A WW1 veteran, died Mel arranged a military funeral for him at Culpepper National Cemetery. My mother and all family members appreciated this very much.To further explain since I am a cousin, my mother Kathryn Connor Mullen was the daughter of Robert Connor. Mel's mother, Helen Connor Laird was the daughter of WD Connor.Robert's older brother. This was a very big family.Anyway my condolences go to anyone in the family who reads this.He was a great man.,Ann Connor Mullen Hirsch"

"My thoughts and prayers are with Laird's family, especially his daughter during this time. He cared about this country even into his finals days. Looking forward to God's Kingdom here on earth when death and war will be no more. Until then, may God be with us as we cope with this loss."

"Sorry to hear of this. Mr. Laird was a regular customer at the butcher shop and deli in front of The Forest at Island Park (S.Ft. Myers, FL) while it was there from 1995-2001. It was a pleasure talking to him and he was still as sharp as a tack. I saw him at Publix a couple years ago and he remembered me right away"
