Bryce Dejean-Jones, a rookie NBA guard with the New Orleans Pelicans, was fatally shot May 28, 2016, in Dallas, Texas, according to multiple news sources. He was 23.

Dejean-Jones was shot in the abdomen after allegedly breaking down the door of an occupied apartment early Saturday morning. He was transported to a hospital where he later died of his wound. An investigation is ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the event.

“It is with deep sadness that the Pelicans organization acknowledges the sudden passing of Bryce Dejean-Jones,” said the Pelicans in a statement. “We are devastated at the loss of this young man’s life who had such a promising future ahead of him. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bryce’s family during this difficult time.”

This was Dejean-Jones’ first season in the NBA. He played 14 games for the Pelicans, where he averaged 5.6 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.1 assists in 19.9 minutes per game. His performance secured a three-year deal with the team before surgery for a broken wrist ended his season in February.

Dejean-Jones was born Aug. 21, 1992, in Los Angeles. He played for three different schools during his college career including USC, UNLV, and Iowa State. He went unselected in the 2015 NBA draft but made the roster of the Idaho Stampede of the NBA Development League. From there he was called up by the Pelicans.

His agent, Scott Nichols, told ESPN, “Bryce overcame a lot of obstacles to get to this point in his career. He was a joy to be around, a talent just turning the corner in his career.”
