Charles Shackleford, an NBA player for six seasons who had been a 1980s standout at North Carolina State University, died Friday, Jan. 27, 2017. He was 50.

Shackleford, a 6-foot-10 power forward and center, was named to the first-team all-Atlantic Coast Conference in 1988. In three seasons with N.C. State, he averaged 13.7 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. While at N.C. State, he gained some national notoriety for a humorous quote during a postgame interview, telling a reporter "I can shoot with my left hand. I can shoot with my right hand. I'm amphibious."

Selected in the second round of the 1988 NBA draft by the New Jersey Nets, Shackleford also played for Philadelphia, Minnesota, and Charlotte during his NBA career. He also found success internationally, playing for pro teams in Italy, Greece, and Turkey. He retired in 2000 with a career NBA average of 5.4 points per game and 4.8 rebounds per game.
