NFL linebacker Dave Edwards, who played in three Super Bowls with the Dallas Cowboys, died Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2016. He was 76.

A gifted athlete, Edwards played both offense (as a receiver) and defense (as an end) for Auburn University. He was named an All-SEC player in his senior year and signed with the Dallas Cowboys in 1963.

With fellow linebackers Chuck Howley and Lee Roy Jordan, Edwards was feared around the league as part of the Doomsday Defense. He played in three Super Bowls, including the Cowboys' first NFL championship win in 1972's Super Bowl VI.

During a 12-season career with the Cowboys (1963-75), Edwards missed only one game. He was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1987.

“He was one of those guys that was built to play football,” said Mike Helms, Edwards' teammate at Auburn and in high school. "I think that’s what made him a great defensive end at Auburn and linebacker at Dallas because he was able to use his strength, and size, and physical body to play great defensive football.”

Edwards died in his sleep just a week short of his 77th birthday. According to his brother, Tim Edwards, he had been scheduled to undergo surgery to address a heart condition Dec. 8.
