Bill Dineen, a former professional hockey player and coach, died Saturday, Dec. 10, 2016, at his home in Lake George, New York, according to The Associated Press. He was 84.

Dineen played parts of five seasons with the Detroit Red Wings from 1953 to 1958. He won two Stanley Cup championships with a team that featured the legendary right winger Gordie Howe. He later went to the Chicago Black Hawks, where he played 41 games during the 1957-58 season. He scored 51 goals with 44 assists during his NHL career.

He then played for several different teams over the years in the AHL and WHL before retiring in 1971 at age 38. He scored 264 career goals, evenly split between the two leagues.

After the end of his playing career, he became a coach. He led the Houston Aeros of the WHA to two straight championships and featured former Red Wings teammate Gordie Howe and his sons Mark and Marty as players. He was named the WHA’s coach of the year in 1977 and 1978. He coached the Red Wing’s AHL minor league team, the Adirondack Red Wings for six seasons, winning league titles in 1986 and 1989. He was inducted into the AHL Hall of Fame in 2014.

Five of Dineen’s sons played professional hockey with three, Kevin, Gordon, and Peter playing in the NHL. “Bill Dineen devoted his career to our sport, winning Two Stanley Cups with the Detroit Red Wings, shaping the lives of numerous players during decades of coaching and crafting a hockey legacy that carries on today through his sons.” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said in a statement. “The National Hockey League sends heartfelt condolences to the Dineen family on the passing of this distinguished and greatly respected individual.”
