GIBBONS, Shirley Ann Shank, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on April 21, 2013. She was born in Auburn, N.Y. on June 6, 1934 to Philip and Grace Shank. Shirley is survived by her husband of 54 years, Cuyler M. Gibbons Sr.; her son, Cuyler M. Gibbons Jr. (Jane) of Ventura, Calif.; her daughter, Catherine G. Kunkel (Chris) of Midlothian, Va.; three granddaughters, Natalie Gibbons, Katy Kunkel and Emily Kunkel. She grew up in Union Springs, N.Y., on the banks of Cayuga Lake, in the Finger Lakes region. In 1950, she moved to Portsmouth, Ohio and attended Portsmouth High School. She graduated in 1952, after being crowned Homecoming Queen. Shirley attended Ohio Wesleyan University, where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority and graduated from the Ohio State University in 1956 with a degree in elementary education. She taught first grade in Wellesley, Mass., White Plains, N.Y., and Key West, Fla., while her husband served in the U.S. Navy. Throughout her life, Shirley was a loving and devoted daughter, wife, mother and grandmother. She was accomplished in the needle arts and was a longtime member in several local, state and national needlework guilds. Shirley will be profoundly missed by her family and friends. A memorial service at Salisbury Presbyterian Church will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, April 28, followed by a reception for family and friends at Salisbury Country Club. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be sent to the American Cancer Society.
