Curtis Hanson, the Oscar-winning screenwriter who directed "8 Mile" and "L.A. Confidential," died Sept. 20, 2016, according to multiple news sources. He was 71.

Hanson directed the psychological thriller "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle" (1992); the crime film "L.A. Confidential" (1997), the drama "8 Mile" (2002) starring the hip-hop artist Eminem, and the romantic comedy "In Her Shoes" (2005).

Hanson won the Academy Award for best adapted screenplay in 1998, for co-writing "L.A. Confidential " with Brian Helgeland. The film was based on the James Ellroy novel of the same name.

Hanson was born March 24, 1945, in Reno, Nevada. After dropping out of high school, Hanson worked as a freelance photographer and editor for Cinema magazine. His film career began in the 1970s.

Tributes to the screenwriter and director flooded social media after word of his death spread.

Eminem wrote: "He basically made me into an actor for 8 Mile. I'm lucky I got to know him"

Actor Russell Crowe, who also worked with Hanson, noted Hanson's perfectionist tendencies in his tweet: "Obviously distracted & upset...RIP to Curtis Hanson... this correction because he would have asked for another take...'in technicolor sir'"

Actor James Woods also shared his condolences on Twitter: "This saddens me deeply. I worked with Curtis on #TooBigToFail. Great director and the nicest man. RIP, dear friend."
