Richard W. Sheaffer
Richard W. Sheaffer passed away on Sunday, November 25, 2012, at the University of Virginia Medical Center. He was the son of the late Paul and Esther Sheaffer of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy M. Sheaffer; son, Tom Sheaffer; daughters, Beth Cutler and husband, Gary, and Lydia Dolan and husband, Brian; four beautiful granddaughters, Suzanne and Stephanie Cutler and Katy and Amy Dolan. He was a graduate of Penn State University with a degree in Industrial Engineering. A Life Member of the Penn State Alumni Association, he served as treasurer of the Blue Ridge Penn State Club. He also served as an academic recruiter for Penn State.
He retired from the local DuPont plant in September 1987 with nearly 37 years of service. Following his retirement he was employed as an independent contractor with DuPont's Quality Management and Technology Center. He was a Senior Member of the American Society for Quality Control.
Active in the affairs of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, he taught Sunday school for 25 years, was President of the Congregation on numerous occasions, and was a trustee of the congregation. He was the first secretary of the Board of Virginia Synod Lutheran Homes.
In addition, he served on the boards of the local Red Cross and Heart Associations, on the curricula committee for Blue Ridge Community College, and on the United Church Nursery Board, where he was the resident "Granddaddy."
A celebration and memorial of his life will be held at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 500 South Wayne Avenue, Waynesboro, Virginia, 1 p.m. Saturday, December 1, 2012, followed by a reception in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Friends' Fund at Grace Lutheran Church. McDow Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
