John Richard Ward Jr., 64, of Charlottesville, died early on Saturday, October 27, 2012, at his home.
He was born on January 24, 1948, in Charlottesville, a son of the late John R. Ward Sr. and Mildred Kirby Ward.
Mr. Ward became a Police Officer for the City of Charlottesville in 1970. He served as a firearms instructor, a trainer for mounted officers and a crime scene analyst. In February of 1997, he received his Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice management at La Salle University in Mandeville, Louisiana. He also assisted the Weyers Cave Police Academy throughout his career. In 2007, he retired as Sergeant John Richard Ward Jr., badge number 126.
Throughout his life he met and made many life long friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and grew to love him. He is survived by his wife, Gloria Ward; one daughter, Brandie Morris and her husband, Brad; one sister, Barbara Moran; a step-granddaughter, Alexis Morris; and his beloved companion of 12 years, his German Shepard, Richter. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday, November 1, 2012, at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Gordonsville, for visitation. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Martha Jefferson Cancer Care Center, 500 Martha Jefferson Drive, 3rd Floor, Charlottesville, VA 22911, or the American Cancer Society, 4240 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, VA 23058.
