Born in Roanoke, the son of Albert Sidney and Frances Mason McCown, he is survived by brothers, Lee McCown and his wife, Laura Cameron, of Richmond, Robert "Rusty" McCown of Roanoke and David McCown and his wife, Happy, of Leesburg, Va.; nephews, Derek McCown of Richmond, Kevin McCown (Dawn) of Kiev, Ukraine and Allen McCown of Leesburg; nieces, Sydney Sanderson (Dustin), Alane Cameron Miles (Scott) and Katie McCown of Richmond, Grace McCown of Roanoke (and her fiance, Brian Hughes) and Claire McCown of Leesburg; and great-nieces and nephews, Morgan, Jack and Dottie McCown, Sattie and Frances Sanderson, Jefferson and Lorelei Miles, all of Richmond, Finley and Eliza McCown of Kiev. Wresch Dawidjian of Nashville and Emily McCown of Roanoke, who were beloved members of his family for many years, also survive him. Gary was an accomplished scholar and musician from an early age and deepened his knowledge of Shakespeare, the Bible, classical music, opera, ballet, theater and Drum Corps through a lifetime of studying, teaching and attending performances. A graduate of Princeton University (Phi Beta Kappa), Harvard University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he was a Fulbright Scholar and a Rhodes Scholar finalist. When Gary retired to Richmond in 2003, he became a member of the First Unitarian Universalist Church, where he provided piano accompaniment, hours of cheerful companionship for church members needing transportation and, with the staff and volunteers of the church and ROSMY, helped organize the first gay prom in Richmond. ROSMY named him its Volunteer of the Year for his work on that event. His happiest years of teaching were his 30 years at Georgetown Day School in Washington, D.C. In Richmond, he taught classes at the Maggie Walker Governor's School, Collegiate School, St. Gertrude's and Benedictine. He worked tirelessly on the Obama campaign. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 22, at Jefferson Lakeside Country Club, 1700 Lakeside Avenue, Richmond. Gifts in Gary's honor would be appreciated at ROSMY, Equality Virginia and The First Unitarian Universalist Church.
