Sumru Hale Anday Obituary

Sumru Hale Anday, 83, of Charlottesville, passed away on Friday, March 22, 2013, at the University of Virginia Medical Center. Beloved wife of 61 years to Memet Cem Anday; and mother of Susan Anday Dayton, Sumru was born in Istanbul, Turkey, to Necati and Naime Yorukoglu in 1929, and graduated from Robert College in Istanbul. After marrying in 1952, she and Memet studied at Purdue University, and spent periods residing in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and Istanbul and Ankara, Turkey. In 1959, they moved to Charlottesville, where they have made their happy home and made precious friends ever since. A selfless and always giving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, Sumru lived a rewarding life rich in love and friendship. She is survived by her loving husband, Memet; devoted daughter Susan, son-in-law, Win Dayton; granddaughter, Alida Hart Dayton; brother-in-law, Ahmet Anday, his wife, Melinda Miller, their son, Colin Anday, and his family; and innumerable treasured friends in Charlottesville and Istanbul. She will be buried at a private family ceremony. The family will receive friends from 2 until 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at the Teague Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA, .
