Ann-Marie Matthews Obituary

Ann-Marie Matthews Ann-Marie Matthews passed away peacefully at home in Waynesboro on Wednesday, January 2, 2013, following extended treatment for ovarian cancer. Ann-Marie was born on January 21, 1947, in Johannesburg, South Africa, attended boarding school from age eight, and graduated in fine arts in 1966. She married Neven Matthews in 1970 and they had six daughters. Their oldest daughter, Clare, died in 1976.

Ann-Marie is survived by her five daughters, Catherine, Jessica, Marian, Valerie, and Melanie; sons-in-law, David Damico, Thomas Meth, and Doug Moore; and her beloved grandchildren, Samantha, Luca, Alexandra, and Sophia. In 1987, the Matthews family came to America, and Ann-Marie became a United States citizen in 2000. Her interests and passions were her family, her community, and yoga. She was always interested in helping others, and she was involved in many organizations and activities. These included the United Way in Waynesboro and the Waynesboro Rotary Club, where she served as president and worked on educational and poverty relief; service projects in the United States and South Africa; teaching yoga in The Villages in Florida; studying "Yoga for Cancer Survivors" at Yogaville, Virginia; and providing home communion in Sumter County, Florida. In each of these communities, she quickly made friends through her real and honest interactions, her desire to help others, and her infectious laugh.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 5, 2013, at St. John's Episcopal Church, 473 South Wayne Avenue in Waynesboro.

Other services will be held later in Florida and South Africa. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Community Hospices of America Foundation, the United Way or your preferred charity. The family expresses its sincere thanks to Karen McLean for her outstanding support. McDow Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
