Tom Kinkaid Obituary


Kinkaid, Tom, 94, retired rancher, died October 2, 2013. He was born in Wichita, Kansas, September 20, 1919 to Mae Etta Chappel and Roy Clark Kinkaid. He attended Wichita High School East ('38) and WU ('42). At WU he lettered 4 years in basketball, 2 years in track. He was a member of the Men's Honor 5, president of his fraternity and the Student Council. After enlisting in the U.S. Navy, he was commissioned as an Ensign on the USS Windsor, an attack transport in the Pacific Theater. After the landing at Guam, he was made navigator for the rest of his tour. His ship was part of every major landing after Guadalcanal. In 1943, he married the love of his life, Mary Eleanor Geist. After the war, then Lieutenant Kinkaid became co-owner with his brother, Roy Kinkaid, Jr., of Kinkaid Brothers Ranch Co. and of Kinkaid Cattle Co. During the 60's and '70's, he was vice-president of J.K., Inc., a building management firm. He played bridge, tennis, golf and was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing all of his life on the family ranch. A Rotarian since 1961, he served as vice president. His greatest cause was the Salvation Army, where he was a lifetime member of the local board and honored as Volunteer of the Year. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Mary Eleanor Kinkaid, son Tom Kinkaid (Mary) of Dallas, daughter Susan Williams (Joel) of Dallas, daughter Marcia Smola (Rich) of Wichita, 7 adoring grandchildren,10 great-grandchildren, brother-in-law Bill Geist of Oklahoma City, and several beloved neices and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established at the Wichita Salvation Army, 350 N. Market, 67202, and the Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum, 204 S. Main, 67202.
