Brown was born Peter Lynn Delapp Oct. 5, 1935, in New York, New York. He served in the U.S. Army with the 2nd Infantry Division, based in Alaska. While in the service, he entertained his fellow troops by writing, directing, and acting in plays. After his honorable discharge, he studied acting at the University of California at Los Angeles.

“Every actor likes to work,” he once said. “But there are different qualities of work. I’ve gone to the Philippines to make war movies in the jungles and swamps with leeches, and I’ve ridden horses playing cowboys and Indians. I’ve lots of different kinds of work, and I am grateful for all of it.”

Brown is survived by his fifth wife, Kerstin Kern; a daughter, Christie McBride; two sons, Matthew Brown and Joshua Brown; and three grandchildren.
