Since it's founding in 1968, the Special Olympics has celebrated the accomplishments of athletes with intellectual disabilities – currently, nearly 3 million athletes in more than 180 countries worldwide – and helped teach society tolerance and respect. This memorial site was created to honor all those who make the Special Olympics possible.

Joachim lived a blessed life, but at times when faced with difficulty he chose joy and really put his heart into all aspects.
