ALICE GARRIOCK Obituary


GARRIOCK, Alice L. O'Mara, 68, of Richmond, died Thursday, June 20, 2013. She is survived by her daughters, Jamie Blanton of Powhatan and Audra Edmonds (Brian) of Richmond; her son, Shay Garriock (Leslie) of Pittsboro, N.C.; and four grandchildren, Skye, Lily, Brian Jr. and Nicolette. She was born in New York and raised in Miami Beach, Fla. As a child, Alice was a Florida State diving and swimming champion. Later in life, she became an avid scuba diver and shag dancer. Alice was a devoted mother and grandmother. She was also an animal lover and humanitarian. She worked as a teacher's aide with Virginia Randolph School, Henrico Public Schools and Summer Rec. She later became a police aide for Henrico County. Alice devoted much of her life to helping others. She volunteered her time as a diving and swimming coach for the Special Olympics. She was the founder of the first mentally challenged Boy Scout troop in the state of Virginia, which still exists today. Alice also served as an EMT for the Lakeside Volunteer Rescue Squad. A graveside service will be conducted 12 noon Monday, June 24, at Greenwood Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made online at specialolympicsva.org.
