MITCHELL, John G., 69, departed this life May 12, 2013. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1962, after graduating Lee-Davis High School and was released from active duty in 1966 and honorable discharged in 1968. From 1968 to 1970, he was employed as an engineering draftsman in the landscape division of the Virginia Department of Highways. In 1974, he received his BA from Virginia Commonwealth University and a D. Min. from Union Theological Seminary in Virginia in 1977. He was ordained to the ministry of word and sacrament by Blue Ridge Presbytery on 31 July, 1977. During his 28 years of ministry he served the following Pastorates, Jamestown and Appomattomax. P. E. Presbyterian Churches in Prince Edward County,. Va., 1977 -1981; United Ministries in Higher Education Campus Pastor to the University of Wisconsin - Stout, Menomonie, Wisconsin, 1981 -1987; First Presbyterian Church of Wayne, Nebraska 1987 - 1992, Presbyterian Campus Pastor to Tulane University, New Orleans, La. 1992 - 1994, Amenity and Timber Ridge Presbyterian Churches, Greenville, Tenn. 1994 - 2005. Upon his honorable retirement in 2005, he converted to the Eastern Orthodox faith and was a faithful member of St. Cyprian of Carthage Orthodox Church. There will be a burial service Wednesday night , 7 to 8:30 pm and on Thursday, 10 a.m. there will be the Divine Liturgy for the Dead, both will be celebrated at St. Cyprian of Carthage Orthodox Church, 2570 Huguenot Springs Rd., Midlothian, Va. 23113. Interment will be at 1 p.m. Cool Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, Atlee Station Rd., Mechanicsville, Va.
