Irene Serr Obituary

Serr, Irene 90, of Golden Valley, died March 22. Daughter of Glenn and Myrtle Reynolds, she was born May 2, 1922 in Chicago, IL. She attended the Univ. of Chicago Laboratory School and UCLA, before serving as a recruiter and chaplain's assistant in the Navy during WWII. There she met her husband of 56 years, Hubert H. Serr. Their shared love of the outdoors led to many family camping trips with their children. Irene and Hugh continued their wilderness outings well into retirement, taking two trips to Alaska and many canoe trips in northern Minnesota. They enjoyed frequent visits to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. Together, they worked to protect the environment. They were longtime members of the Izaak Walton League of America, receiving an award for outstanding devotion to the Minneapolis Chapter and furthering the ideals of the League in 1991. They were also active in Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness and Irene served on the Board of the Voyageurs Nat'l Park Assoc. Irene strongly believed in actively contributing to her community. Whether it was advocating for non-smokers' rights through ANSR, addressing a wilderness preservation rally at the state capitol, or working to preserve local history through the Golden Valley Historical Society, she always took action to support causes she valued. Music was a central part of Irene's life. She excelled at the piano from a young age, played the clarinet in high school and the organ in the Navy. She provided piano accompaniment for everything from Girl Scout meetings to PTA programs. She played for services at Valley Community Presbyterian Church and later for Sunday School classes at Westminster Presbyterian in Minneapolis. Irene loved classical music and regularly attended Minnesota Orchestra and SPCO concerts well into her 91st year. Preceded in death by her husband, she is survived by her four children, Marjorie, Frederick, Robert and Madeline, and two grandchildren, Rebecca and Patrick. A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on April 13 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1200 Marquette Ave., Mpls. Memorial gifts to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum suggested.
