GRIFFIN, Julius, M.D., passed away peacefully on August 14, 2013. Born in Richmond, Va. in 1919, Dr. Griffin was the son of Ella Lubner Goldstein and Charles S. Goldstein. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond and joined the Army. He was in the Horse Cavalry at the start of World War II and served in the European Theater. Julius was always humble about his military service and ever grateful the G.I. Bill allowed him to attend UCLA. He fondly remembered a carpool, crowded with students, which compelled a lovely young lady to sit on his lap. He and Roz shared 59 years of marriage before she preceded Julius in death in 2006. Julius returned to Richmond to enroll at the Medical College of Virginia and graduated in 1953. He received his training in psychiatry from the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kan. Julius and Roz moved to Encino, Calif., and established the Griffin Clinic. This psychiatric facility was distinguished by its innovative, multi-disciplinary treatment approach to assisting patients and their families. His personal psychiatric work was characterized by this sentiment: "Listen to what they say. Listen to what they don't say. Listen to what they cannot say, and listen gently." Dr. Griffin's professional association memberships were numerous, including the American Psychiatric Association, the American Medical Association and the California Medical Association. He generously and frequently volunteered his expertise over a 50-year career. He last worked as a psychiatrist at the California State Prison in Tehachapi in 2006. He never lost his fascination with people. Dr. Griffin leaves behind many family members, friends and patients, who cherish the memory of a man who lived to make the world a better place. A graveside service will take place 1 p.m. Sunday at Eden Memorial Park, Mission Hills, Calif. Donations to honor his memory may be made to the Boy Scouts of America, the MCV Foundation, 1228 E. Broad St., P.O. Box 980234, Richmond, Va. 23298, or a charity of your choice.
