University of Iowa Memorial Site: Notable Deaths & Obituaries

Founded in 1847, the University of Iowa has been ranked as one of the top 10 international universities in the U.S. and was the first university to offer a Master of the Fine Arts. Its Iowa Writers Workshop is the most prestigious writing program in the country, and the school also has a proud history of athletics with many former Hawkeyes on the rosters of current NBA and NFL teams. Norton D. Freyer of Scottsdale, AZ and formerly of Oak Park, IL died on Friday, August 21 at the age of 90. He served his country bravely in World War II as a member of the 13th Armored Division and afterwards attended Drake University in Iowa where he met the love of his life, Carol (nee Kaufmann).
