Alan C. Goddard Obituary

New London, NH Alan C. Goddard died November 24, 2006 at home with his family after a battle with ALS at the age of 74. Alan is survived by his loving wife of over 51 years, Gail Molander Goddard; his devoted children: Rhonda and her husband Ron Green of Boston, MA, Jeff Goddard and his wife, Sydnee of Kensington, NH, Nancy and her husband, Glenn Anderson of Dallas, TX, and Brian Goddard and his wife, Stephanie of Woburn, MA; along with six grandchildren: Tyler, Brooke, Molly, Grace, Sean, and Heather. Alan will also be missed by his sister, Carol and her husband Harry Reid of Lancaster, PA. Alan was preceded in death brother Robert Goddard, of Mashpee, MA.

Born in Gardner, Mass 11/26/31, the son of Virginia Curtis and Leigh B. Goddard. In 1949 Alan graduated from Gardner High School of Gardner, MA. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa, Cum Laude in 1953 with a B.S. in Mathematics from Bates College, he lettered in football, basketball, and tennis. Alan remained an active Bates alumni and supporter of Bates athletics. He funded the “Alan C. Goddard” football award which was based upon an individual’s personal achievement and his contribution to the total team effort. In 1954 Alan began service in the Army at Dugway, UT then transferred to the Army Reserves in 1956 to allow him to complete graduate school at the University of Iowa for a masters degree in actuarial mathematics.

Alan was a member of the Society of Actuaries and American Academy of Actuaries while working at Massachusetts Mutual from 1957-1965, then 13 years at Phoenix Mutual Life Insurance Co. in Hartford, CT as a pension actuary before starting his own private pension company, ACG Associates, which he ran for 18 years. Along with his strong work ethic, Alan was an avid sports enthusiast and throughout the years enjoyed skiing, tennis, golf, swimming, biking, hockey, paddle tennis, basketball, football, squash, sailing, and all water sports. In addition to physical fitness, Alan also took great pride in his gardening, landscaping, and above all, his family.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held for Alan on Saturday, December 9, 2006 at 2:30pm, at the St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church located at 52 Gould Rd. in New London, NH.
