Sue Shaughnessy Obituary


Sue Shaughnessy, age 91, passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at Midlands Living Center.

Sue was born December 28, 1921, in Council Bluffs, to Kenneth and Helen Morrow Sherman and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1940. Sue attended the University of Iowa for three years. She was united in marriage to Frank Shaughnessy in February of 1944.

She worked for the Council Bluffs Schools for 17 years as a Secretary, retiring in 1983. Sue was a longtime member of Holy Family Church, their Altar & Rosary Society and quilters Club, and a 50 plus year member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.

Sue will be remembered for her zest for life, love of family and friends, and her warmness and kindness to everyone entering her home. She loved animals and traveling.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents; husband Frank in 1979; and brother, Bill "Bub" Sherman.

Survivors include son, Patrick "Sparky" Shaughnessy and wife, Nancy, of Highland Park, Texas; daughters, Maureen Shaughnessy-Irwin, of Council Bluffs, Rita Shaughnessy, of Omaha and Mary Shaughnessy-Swisher and husband, Tim, of Council Bluffs; 12 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren.

Holy Family Ladies Rosary Recitation Friday, 4 p.m. Christian Wake Service Friday, 6 p.m., followed by visitation until 8 p.m., all at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Bayliss Park Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial Saturday, 10 a.m., Holy Family Church. Interment Cedar Lawn Cemetery followed by a luncheon back at Holy Family. Memorials are suggested to Holy Family Church, Hospice of Southwest Iowa and Midlands Humane Society.
