Mrs. Claudia Echols Wynder FLORENCE - Funeral service for Mrs. Claudia Echols Wynder, 70, will be conducted 12:15 p.m. Sunday, August 25, 2013 at Savannah Grove Baptist Church, 2620 Alligator Rd., Effingham. Interment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens directed by Smith Funeral Home of Florence, LLC. Claudia, the oldest of four daughters of the late Hannie N. and Gladys S. Echols, was born November 11, 1942 in Effingham, SC and raised at the family home in Florence, SC. She died on Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. Claudia attended Florence District One public schools, graduating from Wilson High School, Class of 1960. She obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Library Science from South Carolina State College and a Master's Degree in Library Science from Wayne State University in Michigan. In her early career, she worked as a School Librarian in Kingstree, SC; then moved to Virginia, where she also worked as a Librarian. She married and moved to Detroit, MI, where she continued her life's work there. She was Claudia was very active in her church communities in Michigan and South Carolina. Upon her return to Florence, she maintained her active life, being a sweet companion for her mother, and a sweet friend to her many friends, acquaintances and family. She revived her membership at Savannah Grove Baptist Church and joined the Azalea Home & Garden Club. Survivors are three sisters, Dorothy E . Byrd of Columbia, SC, Queen E. (Isaiah) Henderson of Carrollton, TX and Gladys Shabazz (Jamee) Abdul-Rasheed of Raleigh, NC; two aunts, Edith Johnson of Timmonsville, SC and Natalie Swinton of Washington, DC; one uncle, Robert Greene of Baltimore, MD; a host of nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Family visitation Saturday evening, August 24, 2013 from 6PM-7PM at J.O. & Annette Smith Memorial Chapel, 307 S. Johns St., Florence and other times at the home, 707 Chase St, Florence.
