Dr. Benjamin Rank Obituary


Rank, Dr. Benjamin ‘Ben' H. age 88, of Minneapolis was born in LaCrosse, Wisconsin on April 1, 1925 and died on October 25, 2013. He was preceded in death by son, Christopher Jerome, daughter, Jayne Ann Schmitt, grandchildren Michelle Schmitt and Grady Rank, great grandchild, Isabelle Kaufmann, and parents, Cleo (Crandall) and Gale C. Rank. He is survived by his loving wife, Ann, of 66 years, seven children: Ellen (Dennis) Debe, Brian (Joyce) Rank, Jeffrey (Beth) Rank, Susan (Ron) Krausz, Glen Rank, Emily (Melvin) Weston, and Timothy (Julie) Rank, along with 18 grandchildren (Demetri, Tanya, Derek, Sara, Kevin, Christopher, Mariko, Miki, Kevin, Hannah, Timothy, Daniel, Jacob, Eric, Timothy, Trenton, Cleo and Ella) and a whole mess of great-grandchildren. He served in the US Army during World War II and was stationed in the Philippines and Japan. He loved music and, to earn money during college and graduate school in the 1940s and 50s, he led and drummed in a jazz trio that played dance clubs around Wisconsin and Minnesota. He was a respected educator and for 33 years served as a teacher, principal and school administrator. He began his career as a teacher and principal in Austin, Minnesota; he later served as the principal of the University of Minnesota Elementary School; and for the last 20 years of his career he was the Director of Elementary Education for the Roseville School District. When asked recently what he was most proud of in his life, he smiled and said, "Of course, my kids." He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He lived a rich and full life, and was pleasantly surprised by living much longer than he anticipated. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM on October 30th at St. Lawrence Church in SE Minneapolis, with visitation one hour before. Burial at Fort Snelling immediately after the mass.
