Catherine "Kay" Mlinar Obituary

Mlinar, Catherine "Kay" Died in her Saint Anthony home on Saturday morning, Nov. 10, 2012 at the age of 99. She was a northeast Minneapolis native, having been born at home on NE 5th Street Jan. 11, 1913, to William and Pearl (Homa) Mlinar. Kay was preceded in death by her parents; 3 brothers, John, Andrew and William; and 2 sisters, Ann (Mlinar) Milner and Helen (Mlinar) Quady. "Auntie Kay" is survived by her nephew, Roy B. Quady. Catherine attended Holland School and Edison High, Class of 1929, where she was elected treasurer. Kay graduated with a teaching credential in 1935 from the College of Education at the University of Minnesota where she was a member of Sigma Kappa sorority. During WWII she was a Red Cross volunteer stationed at Camp Bowie, TX where she was Entertainment and Recreation Director. She taught in elementary schools around the world, including Hawaii, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, England, The Philippines, Japan, Turkey and Germany. Following retirement in 1975 Catherine wrote poetry and books for children. She was proud to be entered into the International Poetry Hall of Fame. "Auntie Kay" will always be remembered for her delightful humor and stories, gentle ways and great generosity. Special thanks to the North Memorial home hospice team, including Dr. Scott Fairbairn and Nurse Maggie Miller; Shirley Carlson, Kay's guardian; and the Visiting Angels staff, including Veronica and Cynthia. Always a petite poet, this poem was published in Catherine's high school yearbook, The Wizard: "In regard to size, you need no alarm. When you shorten the figure, you heighten the charm". Funeral services at ST. MARY'S ORTHODOX CEMETERY ANNUNCIATION CHAPEL, 3025 Stinson Blvd NE Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012 at 11 AM with visitation one hour prior. "A Celebration of Life" 612-789-8869
