She attended the University of Minnesota where she met and fell in love with her late husband, Phillip Nielsen. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Richard and Jim Ries. Jan was a remarkable woman. A beloved teacher of 7th Grade English at Coon Rapids Junior High for 30 years, Jan influenced, during her long career, the lives and minds of many students and coworkers. Possessing the rare combination of outstanding listening skills and a generous heart, Jan was a sounding board, counselor, and supporter for friends and family for all thoughts, concerns, worries, wishes, and aspirations; all done without judgement. She is survived by her four children, Denise Guyton, Scott (Kimberly) Nielsen.
