Karen Patricia Rowley Obituary

Rowley, Karen Patricia Karen Patricia Rowley was born on St Patrick's Day in 1937 in Whitefish, Montana. Her father, James W. Brown, was a doctor in the military so the family moved frequently. When her father was stationed overseas in Africa, she and her mother, Eva (Berentzen) Brown, lived with her paternal grandparents in Paynesville, MN. Eventually she and her mother settled with her aunt's family in Crookston, MN. An only child, Karen was very close to her cousins: Patty (Wold) Lloyd, Ken Wold, and Paul Wold. They are more siblings than cousins. Karen met Harold ("Harry") M. Rowley in high school. They married January 17, 1961. Karen and Harry were long-time members of Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church (HAUMC). Harry developed lung cancer and died in October of 2000. They had a particularly memorable trip to Venice the summer before he passed away. Karen attended the University of Minnesota and earned a BA in English. She taught English for a time then dropped out of the workforce to raise her children, Susan, Patty and Steve. Eventually she returned to school and received a Master's in Social Work. She had a long rewarding career at Hopkins West Junior High School. Several years later, she married Richard (Dick) H. King, another active member of HAUMC. They married February 20, 2004. Their first date was to the Minnesota Symphony and from that time forward they enjoyed their season tickets to the symphony as well as sharing meaningful time together during their many interesting travels to Europe and Asia. She has passed away just a few months shy of their 10th anniversary. She was an accomplished musician. She played bassoon, clarinet, violin and even drums for a time. She took up playing bassoon again after retirement and played with the Lutheran Synod band. She had a great enthusiasm for reading. She participated in three regular book clubs that she was loath to miss. She enjoyed a good discussion. She was very involved at her church and held numerous volunteer positions. She also volunteer for her condo association and was thrilled to have been elected to its Board. She donated a lot of time and energy to AAUW (American Association of University Women). She loved flowers and gardening. The family suggests donations to the HAUMC Foundation or AAUW. Karen passed away on October 1st after a sudden illness. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Harold M. Rowley and her "brother" Paul Wold. Her survivors include her second husband, Richard H. King; children, Susan, Patty and Steve, grandchildren, as well as "sister" Pat (Wold) Lloyd and "brother" Ken Wold. Memorial Service 3 PM Saturday, October 5 at Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church, Groveland and Lyndale Ave, Mpls. Reception to follow.
