Mike Myron Alfred (Mike) Lawrence Obituary

Lawrence, Mike Myron Alfred (Mike) Lawrence of Minneapolis, MN died at his home on December 13, 2013. Mike was born on May 29, 1927 on a farm near Jamestown, ND to George and Alma (Raeder) Lawrence. He is survived by his loving children, Jeremy, Melissa, Jonathon, Nathan and Cara; his ten grandchildren and his brother, Kenneth. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Carolyn; his children, Lecinda and Thomas; and his sister, Evelyn and brother, Robert. Mike graduated from Jamestown High School in 1945. He served his country in the U.S. Navy as WWII was ending. Following the war, he attended Jamestown College and worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad. In 1950, he joined Chubb & Son Insurance, where he worked for more than 35 years. Following his retirement from Chubb, Mike continued to work at other local companies until he fully retired in 2005. Throughout his life, Mike was an avid and talented musician. He sang in his church choirs for more than 50 years, was a member of numerous community musical organizations, including the New Fogey Follies in Minneapolis, and was asked frequently to sing at weddings and other events. Mike was also an avid, life-long learner. He was a diligent reader and a frequent participant in professional and personal education and development programs. Following his retirement, Mike enrolled as an undergraduate at the University of Minnesota and graduated in 2011 with a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies. A memorial service for Mike will be held at 4:30 PM on Wednesday, December 18 at the Plymouth Congregational Church at 1900 Nicollet Avenue. An informal reception will follow the service.
