Raymond Murray Lewis Obituary


Lewis, Raymond Murray age 67 of Chanhassen, who in the 1990s led cutting-edge engineering for such thrill rides as Indiana Jones Adventure at Disneyland and the Incredible Hulk Coaster at Universal Studios, died on May 16 at Fairview Southdale Hospital. A mechanical engineer, Lewis worked for MTS Systems Corp. of Eden Prairie for nearly 30 years. Representing MTS in the 1970s, he was one of the first U.S. businessmen granted a multi-entrance visa to China, where he led engineering work on advanced road simulators. In addition, he was instrumental in the development of the National Advanced Driving Simulator located in Iowa City and used for research by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Prior to joining MTS, Lewis worked for Data 100 and Control Data Corp. After leaving MTS, he joined Shore Western Manufacturing of Monrovia, California. Lewis was born in Minneapolis on March 9, 1946, grew up in Roseville on Lake Owasso and graduated from Ramsey High School (now Roseville Area High). He received his mechanical engineering degree from the University of Minnesota where he specialized in bio-engineering. He was also awarded a certificate in technical management from the Carlson School of Business. Lewis had a passion for classic sports cars and collected a number of MGs through the years. He was a trophy-winning sailboat enthusiast and a former commodore for the Lake City Yacht Club at Lake Pepin where he and his wife, Judy, raced their C&C 30 "Pisces." The couple was also active in boating on Lake Riley where they relished hosting summertime visits by extended family and friends. Lewis is survived by his wife, Judy Lewis; by one brother, Jerome Russell Lewis (Linda Lewis) of Newark, DE; two sisters, Ellen James Martin of Chevy Chase, MD (Anthony Lehman) and Eugenie May Lewis (Darryl Leong) of Redondo Beach, CA; one uncle, John G. ("Jack") Davies of Falcon Heights; and seven nieces and nephews, J. Russell Lewis, of Brooklyn, NY; Raymond David Lewis, of Newark, DE, Elizabeth (Lizzie) Lewis of Washington, DC, Raleigh Martin of Philadelphia, Delaney Martin of San Diego, and Anthony Leong and Jasmine Leong, of Redondo Beach. Lewis was pre-deceased by his parents, Russell King Lewis and Murray Jerome Lewis. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 29 at 2 p.m. at the First Unitarian Society, 900 Mt.
