Rich Alan Kaplan Obituary


Kaplan, Rich Alan 63, died peacefully on Monday, August 19th 2 years after being diagnosed with Progressive Muscular Atrophy. Rich grew up in Waterloo, Iowa. In his youth, he engaged in political activism resulting in an often-recounted stint in jail. Rich was an exceptional man and dedicated his life to helping others, first as a social worker and then as a pediatrician. He worked most recently as the Medical Director of The Center for Safe and Healthy Children - the University of Minnesota Children's Hospital Child Abuse Program. He was also a Professor of Pediatrics at the U of M Medical School and Head of the Section for Safe and Healthy Children in the Division of Academic General Pediatrics. Rich loved the outdoors and made frequent pilgrimages to the Boundary Waters, which he considered his sanctuary. He is survived by his wife, Avonne; his children, Jennifer, Max, Lindsay, Alex and Sophie; his brother, Ron (Linda); and his mother, Ethel. He was preceded in death by his father Jerry. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to University of MN Foundation PO Box 860266 Minneapolis, MN 55486-0266 (please indicate Dr. Richard Kaplan Memorial on memo line) or to the Northfield Buddhist Meditation Center, 313 ½ Division St. Northfield, MN 55057. The reception and remembrance of Rich Alan Kaplan will be held at the University of Minnesota in the Williams Arena Club Room at 1925 University Ave on Friday, October 4 from 1:00- 3:30 pm. Visitor parking is available in the University Ave Ramp as well as the Maroon lot. Friends are welcome to attend.
