Matthew GEARY Obituary

GEARY, Matthew Patrick, passed away on January 29, 2012. He was 41 years old. Matt graduated from Benedictine High School in 1988, Mary Washington College in 1992, and T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond in 1995. He and his wife, Tabitha, have five beautiful children, Michael, Johnathan, Christian, Morgan and Isabella. Matt was raised in Varina, a part of Richmond always close to his heart. He felt at home in the courthouse at an early age and worked tirelessly to help those who could not help themselves. He followed his father's professional footsteps as an attorney. As many clerks, lawyers and judges in Richmond will attest, having two Geary's in the courthouse was always an interesting time. Matt believed in his job and found great professional reward in his time spent as a prosecutor with the City of Richmond. Everyone that knew Matt knew that he had a secret desire to be a policeman, and he held in the highest regard the work and service of these women and men. His greatest joy, most certainly and without doubt, came from being a dad. Anyone who knew him could tell you at least a couple of stories about his amazing boys and precious daughter. It was a complete love, and he never missed an opportunity to tell them how wonderful they are, and how lucky he felt to be their dad. Matt's love for his family was as deep as the deepest part of the ocean and as endless as the night sky. Matt loved Richmond, and he was a true hometown boy. From Varina to St. Bridget's to Benedictine to law school to the courthouse, Matt was always at home here. He was incredibly fortunate to have made lifelong friendships with many wonderful people in our community, and he cherished each one.

In addition to his wife and children, Matt is survived by his grandmother, Dorothy Ratliff; parents, Robert and Susan Geary; sister, Shannon Weisleder and brother-in-law, Travis; nephews, Baird, Chase and Finn Weisleder; sister, Kelly Davis and brother-in-law, Jonathan; niece, Georgina "Gigi"; and nephew, Cash Davis. There will be visitation on Wednesday, February 1, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Bliley's Funeral Home, 3801 Augusta Avenue. A celebration of Matt's life and Christian Mass will be held at St. Benedict's Church at 12 p.m. on Thursday, February 2. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Geary Family Fund at any First Market Bank, or a charity of your choice.
