Richard Jolly Obituary

Richard "Dick" Jolly Richard "Dick" Jolly died on Friday, March 1, 2013, at age 94, in Charlottesville, Virginia, of complications from long standing heart and kidney disease. He is survived by his daughter, Janna Mahaffey of Earlysville, Virginia; his grandaughter, Brittain Mahaffey of Queens, New York; and his son, David Jolly of Roy, Washington. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years, Pauline Tillman Jolly. Dick attended the University of Texas at Austin and Tulsa University, where he received a bachelor's degree in physics and a master's degree in mathematics. He entered the United States Army Air Corps in 1942, first receiving training in meteorology at the University of Chicago and then serving as a weather officer in India and Burma. After being discharged with the rank of captain, he returned to Exxon Mobil where he worked for 45 years doing geophysical research. During this period he published several research papers and received recognition from the Society of Exploration Geophysicists for his pioneering work in geophysics. Above all, he will be remembered by his children as a gentle, generous man who devoted his life to making certain his family was comfortable and safe. No sacrifice was too great and no kindness too difficult for Dick when it came to his family, and his tender, sincere gifts of many kinds will be sorely missed. Dick will be buried in a small, private service at a veteran's cemetery in Culpeper, Virginia. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cure Alzheimer's Fund, or to Charlie's Fund, a charity that helps financially distressed pet owners pay unexpected veterinary bills.
