F. Richard "Dick" Weinberger Obituary

Weinberger, F. Richard "Dick" age 84, of Sun City, AZ succumbed to cancer Sept. 26, 2013 at hospice in Cottonwood, AZ. Dick is fondly remembered as an energetic, smart, caring and witty family man. He is survived by sister Mary Wagner, brother Joseph (Mary Ann), son William (Judy) and daughters Susan (Jon Michael) Perry and Linda (David) Dickinson, as well as grandchildren Katherine, Eric, Adam, Anna, Hannah and Joshua. He is preceded in death by his wife of 52 years Marilyn, and brothers Peter and Morris. Dick was born Dec. 15, 1928 in Willow River, MN. He attended Melrose H.S. and graduated from Jordan H.S. in 1946, entered the U.S. Army Air Corps, trained in electrical engineering and served on Guam. After his discharge, Dick attended Mankato State Teachers College and University of Minnesota, receiving a Bachelor of Science in 1954. He taught math at Greenway H.S. in Coleraine, MN. He married Marilyn Bloomquist in Nov. 1955. In 1958, they moved to Wisconsin where he received a M.S. in Science Education at University of Wisconsin, Madison and created computer software models for an equipment manufacturer. Dick continued his pioneering career in computers with positions of increasing responsibility at firms in Arizona and California. Among other accomplishments, he extended the Fortran language, developed computers used to implement ARPAnet (predecessor of the Internet) and was a well-respected senior manager. In 1991, Dick retired to Sun City, AZ. Always an active man, Dick's interests included home improvement, gardening, fishing, camping, swimming, bowling, tennis and ultimately golf. His children inherited his love of the outdoors. He read voraciously, kept up to date with technology and played bridge, a social activity he shared with his wife. Richard will be laid to rest at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix. Memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society.
