John "Jack" Garbutt Obituary


MUSCATINE, Iowa - Dr. John T. "Jack" Garbutt, 83, of Muscatine, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013. The Rev. Jason Crossen will officiate. A funeral luncheon will be held immediately following the mass at the parish hall. The family requests that you join them to honor his kindness, wisdom and humor. And, let a part of him live on with us in our own lives. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to a Jack's beloved alma mater, Beloit College -Beloit College, Attn: Gift Processing Coordinator, Development and Alumni Relations, 700 College St., Beloit, Wis. 53511. The Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Jack was born on April 19, 1929, in Janesville, Wis., the son of Genevieve and Earl Garbutt. After high school, he graduated from Beloit College in 1951 with Honors in chemistry and was elected to the national honor society of Phi Beta Kappa. He attended the University of Wisconsin and completed his PhD in biochemistry in 1958. During the Korean War, he served in the U.S .Navy Air Force and completed his pilot training in Pensacola, Fla. While in Madison, he met "the love of his life", Joyce Osborn, a beautiful and witty occupational therapist, working on her master's degree. They were married Nov. 21, 1953. Jack worked at Grain Processing for more than 35 years, as director of biochemistry and biotechnology. During his working career, he was awarded more than 12 U.S. patents. After his retirement, he served as a consultant for PPG, and Iowa State University as a fermentation service specialist. He served as chairman of the Iowa-Illinois section of the American Chemical Society during the early 1960s. He was also a past board member of the the Muscatine Power and Water. As a member of Ss Mary and Mathias Parish, he served on the parish council and as an usher for more than 40 years. Jack was an avid White Sox and Packer Fan and found true joy with any sport that included a ball. Neither his work nor his love of sports could compete with his true joy through family gatherings at the cottage in Ely, Minn. He is survived by his children John (Rowena, son Joey) living in San Francisco, Ca.; Mary (grand dog) living in Plymouth, Minn.; and Katie Heitzig (Charlie, daughters Ellie and Grace) living in Maple Grove, Minn. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce; his parents; one sister and three brothers.
