Barbara Mary Sullivan Beard Obituary

Barbara Mary Sullivan Beard

(1922 - 2012) Woodbridge Virginia - Barbara Beard passed from this world into our Savior's loving embrace on Tuesday, December 11, 2012 in the presence of her loving husband of 65 years, Vernon Beard, and her two sons, Daniel and David Beard. Her health had been gradually declining for a number of years, culminating in more rapid decline since June 2012 when diminished mobility necessitated a move into assisted living. She was born in 1922 in Glens Falls, N.Y. to Dennis and Mabel Sullivan, and was one of twelve siblings. Barbara graduated from St. Mary's Academy in Glens Falls, N.Y. in 1940, and attended the Adirondack Business School in Glens Falls in 1941. She subsequently worked as a stenographer at the Glens Falls Electric Supply Company from 1941 until 1944. In 1944, Barbara enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving as a stenographer in the Military Personnel Office at Wright Field, Ohio until 1946, when she was honorably discharged. Barbara met the love of her life, Vernon Beard of Foxworth Mississippi, in Washington D.C. in 1947 and they were married after a whirlwind courtship. Her first child, Daniel, was born in Glens Falls, N.Y. on her 26th birthday, on August 8th 1948. They lived in Hudson Falls N.Y. until 1952 when they moved south, briefly to Washington D.C., and then to Alexandria Virginia, where she gave birth to her second child, David, in November 1955. They relocated to Dale City Virginia in 1978, where they spent most of their remaining time together.

Barbara was a homemaker during much of that period, but in the 1960s began a career with the U.S. Bureau of Naval Personnel in Arlington Virginia that spanned nearly thirty years, advancing through the ranks from records clerk to records management supervisor. She and Vernon, also employed by the Bureau, retired together in 1984 to enjoy a quiet life in Dale City. Barbara is survived by her husband, Vernon, of Dale City Virginia; son Daniel Beard of Pasadena Maryland and his wife Marci; son David Beard of Linden Virginia and his wife Sandra Kielsgard; Daniel's daughter JoLecia Crowe and her husband Carl, and their sons Colin and Hayden Crowe; Daniel's son Christopher Beard and his wife Eileen; and David's son Stephen Beard. She had one surviving sibling, Edmund Sullivan of Glens Falls N.Y., and is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Viewing will be from 6-8 PM on Wednesday December 19th at the Mountcastle Turch Funeral Home in Dale City Virginia. Interment will take place at the Quantico National Cemetery in Quantico, Virginia at 11AM on Thursday December 20th, with a graveside prayer service. The family asks that any memorial gifts be directed to the Alzheimer's Association, 1-800-272-3900, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090, www.alz.org; or to the American Heart Association, 1-800-242-8721, 7272 Greenville Ave, Dallas, TX 75231, www.heart.org.
