COAKER, David L., 62, of Richmond, Va., went to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 2, 2013. He was preceded in death by his father, Daniel Kelly Coaker I; and his mother, Ruby Ellis Coaker. David is survived by his children, Ben and Jessica Coaker, Daniel K. Coaker II, Christa Marie Coaker and Rachel Anne Coaker. Other survivors include his grandchildren, Ruby Gillian and Grace Anne; his two former wives, Janice S. Alcoke and Jean S. Coaker; and a sister, Alice Houser and her husband, Mark, and their children, William and Whitney. After graduating from Meadowbrook High School in 1968, David attended Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, Tenn. David then joined the Navy and was assigned to the Seabees Construction Battalion, where he was part of the team to build the airport in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. During his service with the Navy, David was bitten by the "sailing bug" which became a lifelong passion of his. Post service Mr. Coaker settled in his hometown of Richmond, where he became active in local Rugby teams and held several jobs including: machinist, commercial truck driver, bookstore owner (Manna Religious Goods) and licensed sailboat captain. Mr. Coaker was a longtime member of Branch's Baptist Church, where he taught an adult Sunday school class. Later in life, Mr. Coaker was a resident of the Sitter & Barfoot Veterans Care Center. The family would like to extend their deepest thanks and appreciation to all the nurses, aids and staff members that assisted Mr. Coaker. Honorary pallbearers include: Daniel Ellis of New York, N.Y., Scott Ellis of Virginia Beach, Va., Rip Pollay of Powhatan, Va., and Rick Miller of Richmond, Va. A memorial service will be held at Branch's Baptist Church on Monday, May 6, 2013 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either Sitter & Barfoot Veterans Care Center, or the National MS Society.
