Louis BARBERIS Obituary


Louis Barberis, 95, of Melbourne, Fla. and previously of Bedford, Va., passed away on Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at VITAS Inpatient Hospice Unit in Merritt Island, Fla. He was born in New York on February 8, 1918, a son of the late Guido Barberis and Francesco Scagliotti Barberis. Louis served his country in the United States Army during World War II, as an interrogation officer for captured prisoners. He was also involved with Recon and Observation. He received the Shepp Foundation Art Grant, and studied at the National Academy of Design under George Lawrence Nelson, NA. His award winning watercolors have been exhibited with the American Water Society, the National Watercolor Society, the Virginia Watercolor Society, the Roanoke Museum of Fine Arts, the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center, the Frye Art Museum of Seattle, and the Museum of the Southwest in Texas. He was selected as combat artist while serving with the U.S. Army Combat Engineers in World War II. Louis also served as former faculty member of the New York Institute of Technology. An instructor of architectural graphics and design, recognized for his architectural illustrations. He retired as an architect in many different areas across the United States. He was also selected by the United States Coast Guard as their official Coast Guard artist. He was the Recipient of the George Gray award for the 1996 National Exhibition. His works are included in important collections of Holland America Cruises Inc. United States Coast Guard, New York Diocese, City of Roanoke, VA and also numerous private collections. He was also nationally known for his prestigious works in watercolor, oils, tempera, and charcoal. His works have also received international recognition.
Louis is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Matilda Rendenbach Barberis; two sons, Robert Louis Barberis and James Louis Barberis; two daughters, Joan Barberis Zullo and husband, Joseph and Susan Barberis Phillips and husband, Roger; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Resurrection will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church with Father Salvador Añonuevo officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Virginia Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
