Richard A. Wellwood Obituary

Richard A. Wellwood, age 72, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 in Lansing, Mich. due to natural causes. Richard was a resident of Sunfield, Mich. for the past six years.

Richard was born in Belleville, Mich., on May 28, 1939, to Paul and Genevieve Wellwood. He graduated Battle Creek Central High School in 1957. Following graduation, he served in the United States Navy that included a stint in Taiwan. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Richard entered the workforce and married Johanna (Martin) whom he met while pumping gas and washing windows in Lansing. Following their marriage and five years in Lansing, they moved to Williamston, Mich. where they resided for 36 years prior to moving to Sunfield in 2005.

Richard co-founded the Justice in Mental Health Organization (JIMHO). He spent 16 years passionately leading the organization and worked towards better treatment and peer support for those who suffer from mental illness. All over the state, Richard spent time meeting with people and teaching about how peer support and relationships were key components to dealing with mental illness. Richard fought the deep stigma and stereotypes by those who were less informed about mental illness. After his retirement in 1995, the State’s "Richard Wellwood Award" was named in honor of him marking the best supporting relationship between a mental health agency and its peer-run organization.

Over the years, Richard enjoyed fishing, camping, hiking, and traveling across the country. Most of all he truly loved and enjoyed his family whether it was dinner outings with his wife and children, holidays, day trips, attending church specials to watch grandchildren, ball games, band concerts, parades, etc. In addition, many memories and photos remain telling how special his family and friends were to Richard who had a deep love for all of us.

Richard is survived by his wife; brother, Danny; sister, Rosalie; son, Brian (Stephanie; daughter, Mariah and son, Alex); daughter, Brenda (Michael); his beloved four grandchildren, Jessica (daughter, Jessilynn), Chelsea, Samantha, Andrew; several nieces and nephews; and his dog Brandi. Richard was preceded in death by both his parents and two brothers, Edward and Dennis.

Memorial services will be held at First Baptist Church of Sebewa, 13010 Goddard Rd., Lake Odessa, Mich. 48849 on Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at 11 am. Prior to the service, there will be a family and friends greeting time from 9 am to 11 am. After the service, lunch will be provided, at noon, followed by a grave side service including a military salute at 2 pm at the Sunfield Cemetery.

At the family’s request, donations are being accepted to the Hospice House of Mid-Michigan or Justice in Mental Health Organization in memory of Richard: c/o Rosier Funeral Home PO Box 36 Sunfield, MI 48890.
