Bernard G. Flaherty

Bernard G. Flaherty, 85, of Baldwinsville, N.Y. was called to the Lord on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at his home surrounded by his family. Bernard was born December 28, 1927 in North Adams. For the past eighteen years, he has resided in New York. He was a World War II Army Veteran who served in Austria and Germany as part of the Liberation Forces and was a member of the V.F.W. and American Legion. Bernard retired in 1992, after 43 years of service with Gordon and Sutton Contracting of North Adams. A devoted husband and father, his interests included baseball, the outdoors, rolling-skating and nature photography. Most notably was his northeast collection of autumn scenes of barns and covered bridges. He leaves his wife, of 62 years, the former Phyllis M. Collette; his daughter, Phyllis M. (Dennis) Hakeem of North Adams; his son, Bernard (Sandra) Flaherty Jr. of Baldwinsville, N.Y.; his seven grandchildren, Karen and Kimberly Corcoran, Kelly Bekas, Rachael Hakeem and Logan, Tiffany and Mitchell Flaherty; his five great-grandchildren, Cullen McClintock, Michael Dugan, Olyvia Bekas, Alyssa and Chloe Flaherty; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by his son, Brian Timothy Flaherty, formerly of North Adams; by his brothers, Michael, Francis and Herbert; and by his sister, Alice A. Lyons. FUNERAL NOTICE: Calling hours will be Sunday 4 to 7 pm at CARTER FUNERAL HOME, 1604 Grant Blvd., Syracuse, N.Y. Services will be Monday 9 a.m. at the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Augustine's Church, Baldwinsville, N.Y. Burial with Military Honors will be in the Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis Tenn. 38105.
