WILBUR CRANE Obituary


CRANE, Wilbur Carlton "Tom," age 88, of Edgerton, Va., passed away November 10, 2012 after a prolonged and valiant battle with his illnesses. Tom attended elementary school in Edgerton and graduated from Lawrenceville High School. He was a U.S. Army WWII veteran and was stationed first at Fort Gordon, Ga., with the 84th Quartermaster Depot Co. at Leyte in the Philippines during WWII and then at the Boston Army Base in Boston, Mass. After his time in the military, Tom supported his family by raising tobacco and other crops in Edgerton, Va., and also did carpentry work with his brothers, W. B. and Stokes, which they learned from their grandfather, Robert Eddy Crane. Tom retired from active farming in 1982. He was a member of the Brunswick County Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service Committee (Farm Service Agency) for 33 years and chaired the committee for over 20 years. He also served as a member of the Brunswick County Electoral Board and was a member of the County Chapter of the V.F.W. Post 8048. Tom was a dedicated member of Edgerton Methodist Church. He loved music and singing and was active in all church choir activities. He was also instrumental in establishing the Edgerton Memorial Cemetery and was on the organization committee for the cemetery. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wentworth B. and Pattie Crane; his wife of 59 years, Celeste B. "Puddin" Crane; his daughter, Beverly C. "Noot" Williams (Vernon); and a stepgranddaughter, Beverley Doyle Venuti (Joe). He is survived by his daughter, Judith C. Doyle (Marvin); three grandchildren, Christopher Gauldin (Doug), Stephanie Khanna (Rajeev) and Kimberly L. Williams; his great-grandchildren, Aiden and Avani Khanna; a stepgrandson, Jeff Doyle (Erinn); stepgreat-granddaughters, Emily and Mary James; his brothers and sisters, W.B. Crane Jr. (Dot), Stokes Crane (Louella), Irene Barnes, Howard B. Crane and Patsy C. Betz (Jiggs); numerous nieces and nephews; and his many devoted friends in Edgerton, with special thanks to Jane, Doris, Vickie, Lara and Carter. The family wishes to thank Dr. Michael Anderson and the ICU/Acute Care Nursing Staff at Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center for the kindnesses and wonderful care given to Tom during his illnesses. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, November 17, 2012 at Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville, with interment in Edgerton United Methodist Church Cemetery, Lawrenceville, Va. The family will receive friends Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Edgerton United Methodist Church or Cemetery Fund, 92 County Pond Rd., Lawrenceville, Va. 23868.
