Arthur "Artie" Jackson Sr. Arthur "Artie" Jackson Sr., 66, of Culpeper, formerly of Lanham, Maryland, departed this life on Wednesday, August 14, 2013, in Charlottesville, at the University of Virginia Medical Center. He was born on June 1, 1947, to the late Oscar and Melvina Beale and was lovingly adopted and raised by the late Lora Jackson of Gordonsville, Virginia. Mr. Jackson graduated from A.G. Richardson High School in Louisa, Virginia, and served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War in the elite Green Beret. He was a member of Union Baptist Church in Gordonsville, and currently the Free Union Baptist Church in Culpeper. He retired in 2010, after serving as director of operations and transportation for over 30 years with S. Freedman and Sons of Landover, Maryland. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Hortense Hinton-Jackson; three step children, Shani Hinton, Lt. Col. Adisa Hinton and Daramia, and Azim Hinton; one granddaughter, Zhana Tinkler, eight step grandchildren; one sister, Vivian Townsell and Curtis; a sister-in-law, Gloria Beale; devoted godchildren, John H. Griggs Jr. and Deanna Griggs; nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of devoted friends. He was also preceded in death by a son, Arthur Jackson Jr.; and a brother, Oscar Beale Jr. Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. Friday, August 23, 2013, at Free Union Baptist Church in Culpeper, with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The Reverend Calvin E. Lawrence will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday, August 22, 2013, at the church. Preddy Funeral Home of Gordonsville, is handling arrangements.
