Dr. DELORES "DEE" PRETLOW Obituary


PRETLOW, Dr. Delores Evangeline Zachary, a dedicated educator and lifetime children's advocate, died at the tender age of 66, on April 17, 2012. Delores, affectionately called Dee, was born to Lucy Newby Joynes and Eugene Morgan on February 24, 1946 in Hertford, N.C. She was adopted and reared by Lucy's brother, Molton Robert Zachary and his wife, Mrs. Katy Sears Zachary, in Greensboro, N.C. She was raised in the Methodist Church and attended Catholic schools in Greensboro. Dee continued her education and received her undergraduate degree at Virginia State University (1967), a master's degree at Drexel University (1968), and completed her doctorate at the George Washington University (1983). While at VSU, Dee met the love of her life, Revardo "Reep" Pretlow, and they married in May 1969. In 1970, God blessed them with their daughter, Robyn Katy Pretlow. After a long and prosperous career in the Richmond Public School System, she retired as Assistant Superintendent of Operations in 2003. She then served as Director of the L. Douglas Wilder Library at Virginia Union University. Dee believed in service and made a significant contribution to the City of Richmond and the State of Virginia. She joined the Leadership Metro Richmond Organization (1982) and later became chairman of the board. She served four Virginia governors in several capacities. She was appointed to the Medical Assistance Board, Water Control Board, Maymont Park Board, Community Service Board, and served two terms on the Judicial Commission, and on the Board of Trustees of James Madison University. Dee was an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc. for 45 years, a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society, and The Richmond Chapter of Links, Inc. In 1973, she was baptized and joined the Westwood Baptist Church where she remained a loyal member. She leaves to cherish her memory a loving and devoted husband, Revardo C. Pretlow; daughter, Robyn Katy Pretlow; brother, Eugene Morgan; brother, Oliver D. Joynes Jr. (Sheila); sister, Dianne Grace (Bill); sister, Cathryn Joynes; mother-in-law, Thelma Winston Pretlow; sister-in-law, JoAnn Pretlow Ross; brother-in-law, John W. Pretlow (Shirley); brother-in-law, Luther R. Turner; many nieces, nephews, and other family and friends. Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd., where a memorial service by the Richmond Chapter of Links, Inc. will be held at 6 p.m., followed by Upsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. at 6:30 p.m., and where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. The family will celebrate the life and homegoing service on Friday, April 20, 11 a.m. at the Virginia Union University Coburn Hall Alex B. James Chapel, 1500 N. Lombardy St. Dr. Alonza L. Lawrence officiating. Pastor A. Michael Black, eulogist. Interment private.
