JOHN "JACK" DUNNAVANT Obituary

DUNNAVANT, Dr. John "Jack" Marshall Jr., 85, passed away quietly on Friday, August 23, 2013 after a courageous and stubborn battle with lung cancer. He was preceded in death by his father, John Marshall Dunnavant Sr.; and his mother, Sallie Cox Dunnavant. He is survived by his sister, Christine Ridgwell; his daughters, Julie Bruner (Edgar) and Christie Reed (Bradley); grandchildren, Emily, Will, Henry, Katie and Annie; and his nieces, Linda Church and Susan (James) Root. Born and raised on the family farm in Charlotte Court House, Jack joined the United States Navy in 1945 and served as a SeaBee in the Pacific Theater during World War II. After the war, Jack received his undergraduate degree from Virginia Tech, and his master's and Ed.D from UVA. Splitting time as both a farmer and educator, Jack developed into a gifted and well-respected teacher and school administrator, often coaxing students to seek challenging curriculum, respectful behavior and living life with both purpose and direction. After his retirement, Jack returned to farming at both the family farm in Charlotte Court House and his acreage in Richmond. Noted for his personal garden replete with tomatoes, butter beans, corn and sweet potatoes, Jack had a special knack for luring friends, neighbors and family to the joys of working the land with him. The family will receive guests Friday, August 30, at Browning-Duffer Funeral Home in Keysville from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and the funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 31, at Concord Baptist Church in Charlotte Court House. A reception will be held at Sheldon's Restaurant in Keysville following the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Patrick Henry Home for Boys and Girls, the Tuckahoe Volunteer Rescue Squad, or the American Cancer Society. The Browning-Duffer Funeral Home in Keysville, Va., is in charge of the arrangements.
