Joseph Fuller Motley Obituary

Joseph Fuller Motley Chatham - On March 17, 2012, Joseph Fuller Motley peacefully died at his home at 4740 Payneton Road, Chatham, Va. He was born September 1, 1925 and is survived by his wife of 64 years, Judith Ramsey Motley. He is also survived by three sons, Joseph Motley and his wife Robin and Tim Motley and his wife Carol all of Chatham, Tommy Motley and his wife Louise of Gretna; two daughters, Sarah Motley and Susan Furry and her husband, Fr. Michael of Salem; one brother, James Hartwell Motley of Chatham. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, Margaret Adams and Delmar White. He graduated from Chatham High School and soon after joined the Merchant Marines in World War II. Due to devoted friend and employee, Joe Lewis Hodnett, he was able to continue his education at Milligan College and graduated from Lynchburg College in 1959. He had a 30 year career as a History teacher in Pittsylvania County Schools. From his youth he was passionate about conservation, stewardship, and his cows. At sixteen years old, he started Motley Dairy, selling milk and butter on the school bus route. The dairy has developed to provide livelihood for his three sons and his three grandsons. One of his greatest joys was in providing meaningful work for people and he served on several agricultural boards. His love of history and genealogy also led to service as past president of the Pittsylvania County Historical Society. He preserved the old by building the new with numerous house building projects, one of the last being, converting the old Sheva Church building into the home that he and Judith shared for the last 12 years. He was a long standing member of Sheva Church of Christ, serving as an Elder and Sunday School teacher for many years. His Christian faith was exhibited through his hospitality and stewardship of what was entrusted to him. The treasure that he counted as his greatest was a legacy of a family that loves the Lord. The family would like to thank Dr. Shah and the staff of Chatham Family Medical Center and Scott Funeral Home and their staff. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sheva Church of Christ, 4920 Chalk Level Road, Chatham, Va 24531. Funeral services will be conducted at Sheva Church of Christ on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at 11:00 AM with the Ministers Lewis Hall, Chris Stanley and Larry Owen officiating. Burial will be at Sheva Church of Christ Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Sheva Church of Christ on Monday, March 18, 2013 from 6:30 PM till 8:30 PM and at other times will be at the residence.
