GROVE, Mrs. Maria Ballard Whitehead, wife of Frank Thompson Grove, died peacefully after a short illness Sunday, May 12, 2013 in Richmond, Virginia. Mrs. Grove was born January 10, 1926 at "Windy Ridge," Lovingston, Nelson County, Virginia, home of her parents, the late Robert and Sallie Carter Whitehead. Besides her husband, she is survived by her two stepchildren, Mary Brooke Grove, husband, Norman Skorstad; and son, Marco of Brattleboro, Vt.; son, Frank Thompson Grove Jr., wife, Kay; and children, Frank III, John and Hannah of Richmond; by her sister, Ann Whitehead Thomas of Winchester, Virginia; by a niece, Elizabeth Thomas Wallace of Round Hill, Loudoun County, Va.; by a special cousin, Myra Brent McGarry of Shipman, Va.; and nephew, Paul Wilson, wife, Holly; and children, Rachel and Sandy of Richmond, Va. Mrs. Grove was valedictorian of her class at Lovingston High School, and graduated from Hollins College, Yale University and Columbia University. She was a member of the faculty of St. Catherine's School, Richmond, and of Fairfax Hall, Waynesboro. She was a member of Sigma Alpha Iota and Kappa Delta honorary societies, as well as past vice president and treasurer of the Richmond Music Teachers Association, Leschetzky Association of America and the Richmond Music Study Club. Mrs. Grove was a life-long member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Nelson Parish, where a funeral service will be held on June 1, at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Church, 457 Oak Ridge Rd., Arrington, Va. 22922 or to the Hospice of Virginia Foundation, 1700 Bayberry Ct., Suite 300, Richmond Va. 23226.
