Aikens, Hattie

URBANA - Hattie Mae Aikens, 87, of Urbana died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held at noon Monday, Nov. 9, 2009, at Grove Street Church of God In Christ with Dist. Elder Michael Giboney officiating. Visitation will be one hour before service at the church. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens, Urbana. Professional services were entrusted to Perry's Twin City Mortuary Service.

Hattie Mae was born on Jan. 1, 1922, in Anderson, S.C., to the union of Luther Crawford and Alma Ruth (Stowers) Crawford. She was married to Clint Aikens; he preceded her in death.

She accepted Christ in her life and was a member of the Restoration Church.

She leaves to cherish her memories her daughters, Barbara (Avery Sr.) Washington of Champaign, Ruth Postell of Marbury and Alabama and Mamie Lindsey of Hampton, Va.; her son, Jimmy Calvin Lindsey of California; her brothers, Luther Crawford, John Calvin (Helen) Crawford and Robert (Margie) Crawford, all of New York, and Horace (Donna) Crawford of South Carolina; her sisters, Frances Esaw of South Carolina, Sally Butler of Washington, D.C., and Willie Mae Williams of New York; 27 grandchildren; 89 great-grandchildren; 27 great-great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, husband and siblings Betty Jones, Alice Lindsey and Charles Crawford.

Special thanks to nurse Judy from Provena and all who helped care for our loved one and to all whom have showed us love during our time of bereavement.

Bircher, Amy

CHARLESTON - Amy Bircher, 37, of Charleston died at 10:48 a.m. Wednesday (Nov. 4, 2009) in Mattoon.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Caudill-King Funeral Home, 1117 Jackson Ave., Charleston. Pastors Krista Price and Ivan Bennett will officiate. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery, Charleston. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Cain, John

TUSCOLA - John Ronald Cain, 72, of Tuscola died at 1:15 a.m. Thursday (Nov. 5, 2009) at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.

Burial will be in Ebenezer Hall Cemetery, Union County. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Edwards Funeral Home, 221 E. Main St., Arcola.

DANVILLE - Monica Deshay, 44, of Danville, formerly of Champaign, died at 12:29 a.m. Friday (Nov. 6, 2009) at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Funeral arrangements were incomplete at Leek & Sons Funeral Home, 304 E. Williams St., Danville.

Gilliland, Frederick

DEMOSSVILLE, Ky. - Frederick Gilliland, 78, of Demossville, Ky., formerly of Urbana, died Wednesday (Nov. 4, 2009) at Rosedale Manor, Covington, Ky.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Renner-Wikoff Chapel, 1900 S. Philo Road, Urbana. Burial will be in Prairie View Cemetery, Savoy. The Rev. Lee Galbraith will officiate. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Spain, Harold D.

Potomac - Harold D. Spain, age 78, of Danville, formerly of Potomac, died Friday Nov. 6, 2009, at 5:50 a.m. at Hawthorne Inn of Danville.

Harold was born Sept. 15, 1931, in Jamesburg, the son of David and Gladys Shumate Spain. He married Bonnie L. Davis on June 20, 1954, in Danville. She survives.

He also is survived by a daughter, Marilyn (Craig) McArton of Mequon, Wis.; a son, David (Susan) Spain of New Boston, N.H.; three grandchildren, Allison and Katie McArton and Benjamin Spain; a brother, Teddy Spain of Potomac; a sister, June Duncan of Danville; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, LaVonne Crawford.

Harold graduated from Potomac High School in the Class of 1950.

He served in the Navy from 1951 to 1955.

Harold farmed in the Potomac area for over 40 years. In 1980 He retired from Chanute Air Force Base Fire Department in Rantoul, where he served as assistant fire chief for 26 years. He also retired from the Illinois Department of Transportation Highway Division.

He was instrumental in forming the Bluegrass Fire Protection District. He served as fire chief and served on the fire district board of trustees.

He also helped to start the Middlefork Ambulance Service. Harold was a member of the Potomac Church of Christ, a lifetime member of Potomac American Legion Post 428 and the "Gung Ho" VFW Post 6750 in Rantoul.

He served on the South Ross Drainage District.

He enjoyed photography, playing euchre, crop watching, Taffy the dog, and most of all his grandchildren, family and friends.

Graveside services will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 9, at the Potomac Cemetery. In accordance with Harold's wishes there will be no visitation.

The family requests that Harold's memorials should be made to the Bluegrass Firemen, Potomac American Legion or Potomac Church of Christ.

Wolfe Funeral Home 400 N. Vermilion St. Potomac is coordinating the arrangements.
