Bob Schimmel Remembered

Over the weekend, comedian Robert Schimmel died as the result of injuries sustained in a car crash in Scottsdale, Arizona the previous week.

A frequent guest on The Howard Stern Show, Schimmel was also known for his battle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. In 2008, he published Cancer on Five Dollars a Day* (*chemo not included): How Humor Got Me Through the Toughest Journey of My Life, which chronicled his experience fighting the disease. He also incorporated cancer stories into his act.

As news spread of his passing over the Labor Day weekend, many comedians were taking to Twitter to express their condolences. Here’s a sample of what they had to say:

“Robert Schimmel was one of the first people in comedy to call when my folks were fighting cancer. No ego no bs no small talk just inspiration” – Dane Cook

RIP Robert Schimmel. Really funny. Really nice. Really will be missed. – Jim Gaffigan

Robert Schimmel rest in peace. – Tom Green

“I’m so sad about Robert Schimmel dying. I’ve been checking the news for 3 hours hoping it wasn’t true. He was very funny and wonderful.” – Penn Jillette

“Robert Schimmel was one of the funniest and nicest guys in comedy.” – Jimmy Kimmel

“The world lost a true comedian, one of the greats. He turned his pain into laughs. He was fearless. RIP ROBERT SCHIMMEL” – Marlon Wayans
