Stephen Samuel Gordon, the visionary British poet and dubstep MC better known to his fans as The Spaceape, passed away October 2, 2014 at the age of 44 after a long battle with a rare form of cancer. He was well known for his work with pioneering dubstep music label Hyperdub and DJ Kode9. Pitchfork media stated that "if first-wave UK dubstep had a voice, it belonged to Stephen Gordon." We remember his unique life with articles, videos and his Guest Book.
To mark the occasion of the video premiere of the thrillingly gritty EP track "The Devil Is a Liar" in 2014, Gordon talked with The Fader about faith, visual inspiration, and working with Hyperdub labelmate DJ Kode9.
The Spaceape and Kode9 created the song "Time Patrol" for the Hyperdub compilation 5 in 2009. Here is the accompanying music video for that track.
Kode9 and The Spaceape had completed a five-song EP called "Killing Season" which was released just a few weeks after his death. Spaceape's lyrics on the EP address his battle with cancer and the physical effects on his health. Pitchfork gave the EP a positive review. Read the review of "Killing Season" here.
